In it, we examine two questions: can a community live long-term by the principles of burning man? And if so, can those principles be applied outside closed communities, onto society at large?
The village is a community of theme camps staying long-term on secluded rural land, all which have adopted the values of Burning Man, and which are participating in building this new society together.
It will be a hub for burners to come, live, and co-create all year round, and a home for Portugal's future regional burn.
If we can show that a society living by those values can thrive and meet the human needs better than the current “default” society, the door would open to spread those values globally and to make a deep impact in our world.

The build is going to take place at the end of May and the beginning of June.
You're invited to join the build or come visit and stay in June - July. Reach out or scroll down coordinate.

In Brief
-
What is it?
A village for the Burning Man community placed on rural land in Portugal.
-
Who is it for?
The simple answer is: everyone, as long as you feel inspired by Burning Man, want to take an active role in participation, and are adopting the Burning Man and the village principles. At this stage we're escpecially looking for active, positive, creative, "can do" people to kick-start the village.
-
Where is it?
The village is located in central-east Portugal, close to the Spanish border. It is 2:30 hours from Lisbon and Porto, and about 40 minutes from Castelo Branco, the nearest town which has a direct train from Lisbon.
-
Who owns it?
The village will be operated by a nonprofit assoication, with the community members as its assembly. The association will hold the land under a lease agreement for a symbolic fee.
-
Who is behind it?
We're a group of burners who are mostly based in Portugal and the rest of Europe as well as in Koh Phangan, Thailand. Burn Village is a group initiative, started by Avner & Valerie in 2023. You're welcome to join the Facebook group to meet the people invloved.
-
Can I be a part of it?
Sure! Check out the "get invloved" section below.
The 10+4 Principles
-
Radical Inclusion
Anyone may be a part of Burning Man. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community.
- Gifting
Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.
- Decommodification
In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the substitution of consumption for participatory experience.
- Radical Self-reliance
Burning Man encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on their inner resources.
- Communal Effort
Our community values creative cooperation and collaboration. We strive to produce, promote and protect social networks, public spaces, works of art, and methods of communication that support such interaction.
- Radical Self-expression
Radical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than the individual or a collaborating group can determine its content. It is offered as a gift to others. In this spirit, the giver should respect the rights and liberties of the recipient.
- Civic Responsibility
We value civil society. Community members who organize events should assume responsibility for public welfare and endeavor to communicate civic responsibilities to participants. They must also assume responsibility for conducting events in accordance with local, state and federal laws.
- Leaving No Trace
Our community respects the environment. We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather. We clean up after ourselves and endeavor, whenever possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found them.
- Participation
Our community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that transformative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to work. Everyone is invited to play. We make the world real through actions that open the heart.
- Immediacy
Immediate experience is, in many ways, the most important touchstone of value in our culture. We seek to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of our inner selves, the reality of those around us, participation in society, and contact with a natural world exceeding human powers. No idea can substitute for this experience.
- Each One Teach One
We use mentorship to welcome new members into our community. We are ready to educate and share our values whenever it’s beneficial. We support newcomers in becoming a part of the community by meeting them as they are right now and sharing our knowledge and experience in our culture with them.
- Power Sharing
We encourage our peers to be “responsibility-happy”: to initiate, care about what’s going on, take the vantage point of homeowners rather than guests, bring in their gifts and talents, and voice their opinions and ideas. We encourage them to step up to take bits of responsibilities – and power – under their wings.
- Respect
Respect can be defined as “taking the other person’s wants and needs as valid”. From this standpoint stems a range of attitudes, such as how we communicate, handle disagreements, seek consent, honor boundaries, and more.
- Conflict Mediation
We believe that in order to have sustainable community life, we should try to mediate conflicts instead of bottling them up, even if the process seems hard, risky, or painful.
